DIY Lettering 101

Hi Sparklers! Do you LOVE fancy words put together? I know! It looks like a super cool piece of art- and it is! Today, we are going to be learning how - Together! Let's grab a pen and get started!



Let's First Start with something fun! Do you like markers, pens, and more? This is going to be fun for you! Let's look at some basic supplies:

  • Paper

  • Pen

  • Ruler

  • Markers

  • Pencil

  • Eraser

*You can replace the ruler and paper for Bullet Journal sheets

Q. I don't have some of the things listed. Where Can I find Lettering Supplies?

A. Craft stores like Hobby Lobby sometimes have lettering kits! If you're not successful there, try Amazon or Target.


Homework Activity: Gather Supplies

Go around your house and find each supply you need for lettering. Grab some crayons, or paint if desired to take your lettering to the next level!





Ready to practice? Let's look at a simple way to learn to letter. This is how I learned too! If a step is too easy, skip it!

  1. Choose cursive fonts you like and add them to a PDF. Make sure the color is light grey.

  2. Print the sheet, and trace with a marker or pencil.

3. Next, go to Pinterest and search "Lettering ideas". Find one you like and add it to a paper online.

4. Make it transparent and print it out and trace it a few times! Color it if you want too!

5. Play and make your own! Now that you have experiecned other lettering, try your own!


Now, all you have to do is practice!



Homework Activity: Practice Lettering

Make your own or get our free template for this to letter like a pro! Practice on each sheet 5-6 times to get better. Then, try your own lettering. Be creative!



Ready to finish your masterpiece? This is the cherry! Now let's learn about creative ideas, and practice tips to up your game in lettering. First let's look at some Creative ideas!


  • Add extra lines to a word to make it look fancier

  • Make part of your letters thicker

  • Add fun to the insides of hallow letters

  • Add shapes and fill in holes in your letters

  • Mix upercase and lowercase letters



Come up with more things to add to this list! Add shadow? Make letters out of dots? Move the letters diagonal and different directions? Be creative!

In this activity, you will be given a list of words and then a way to make it cooler. After you do that, try it with different words!

Homework Activity: Use Your Skills

Now that you can letter, try making some things! You could do a card, or a picture. Come up with something fun! Here is how you could do it:


Draw something (EX: Gift tag). Add some guide lines to it.

Next, add your design. Color it!

Last, erase the guide lines.

Next, share your work with someone! They will LOVE it!
