Herstory: Clara Barton

Hey girls! I hope you enjoyed the Clara Barton story in the last issue. Well, today I am going to include more pictures, and more details! Hope you enjoy!

Clara's passion for helping others started from a young age. When Clara's brother, David, was 11, he fell from a raft and got horribly hurt. Little Clara had stayed in the hospital with him and refused to leave her brothers until he was healed. Clara loved helping the doctor get bandages and reach for supplies. One day, the doctor decided to let Clara do more work. He showed her the operations and how to do them. Clara listened very carefully. Soon her brother healed and she was able to go to school.

When Clara got back to school, she excelled! When she finished school, she went to college and got a degree in education. Soon she opened a new school. The first year, Clara only had a few students, but the school grew! Soon Clara had to get another building built for the growing school!

Alas, another problem arose. Clara's school was rapidly growing. One day Clara went to a school board meeting. When she entered the room, no one seemed to notice, but she made her attendance known.

She said "So what" One of the men stopped her and said, "We know you have done a lot for this school, but with a school this size, a woman can not possibly be the owner. We have already made this man principal".

Clara was sad. Her school board had made another person principal without her knowing. She knew it was time to move on.

Not to long after this, the Civil war arose. Clara did all she could to help. She wrapped bandages, made food, and more. She just had one problem. The supplies weren't getting to the warfront fast enough! Because of this, Clara decided to go on her own. When she arrived she gave the soldiers food and supplies. They each thanked her for her kindness.

When the war was over, Clara decided to start the American Read cross. Clara Barton served as Red Cross president for 23 years. Because of Clara, many people have benefitted from help after disasters and more.

Well! I hope you enjoyed that. Tell me what you think in the comments- I would LOVE to know.
