Overcoming Fear of the Future

Updated: Nov 12

I have had lot's of fear for most of my life. When I was really young, I had fear of dogs, spiders, the dark, and lots of other things. As I got older, I started having more anxiety. I feared death, demons, and really my future.

By the time I was ten, things were a mess. I tried to keep things to myself. But now, with the help of Christian counselors, books, and ultimately Gods working in my life, I no longer fear most of the things I feared in the past.

Today, I want to focus on overcoming fear of the future. I had lots of anxiety and fear thinking about my future (I always thought worst case scenario). Every time I feared the future, I didn't enjoy the present. Now, I am trying more and more to live with Joy!

Before I really get started, I want you to know something. God did everything for me. I can't do anything without Him. If you have not accepted Jesus into your life, you totally should! He is the greatest person out there.

First, I learned to overcome any fear, we must pray. We can not fight alone. We need a helper, Jesus. Prayer used to be something I struggled with. One thing that changed me forever, was learning about friendship with Jesus. You see, I used to think Jesus was this stern person I had to talk to.

I thought that yes, He would forgive my sins, and yes, He wanted to know my requests, but I thought that He didn't enjoy talking to me. Learning that Jesus died, just so He could have a personal relationship with me, was life changing. Now, when ever fear creeps up on me, I take my anxiety to Jesus. He always helps me!

Second, finding verses about my fears was SO helpful. The Bible is full of great stuff, girls! You got to read it! Here are some verses I really love about fearing the future!

Matthew 6:31-34

“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

Romans 15:13

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.

Girls, I think it is SO important to turn to God when we fear. I have learned that when we are fearful, we are relying on our own abilities instead of relying on God for EVERY aspect of our lives.

God has never failed us, but if we solely on ourselves, we are guaranteed to fail! Life doesn't always turn out how we planned, but that is why we trust Him! The beauty of the gospel is that we will never be enough on our own, and that is why we need a perfect savior, why we need Jesus.

For the rest of my life, I want to focus on the good that God is doing for me in the present! I want to enjoy the present that God has planned for me instead of fearing.

Sometimes, we still aren't happy with the present. Instead of groaning about loosing one of our friends, or not getting something we wanted, we've got to rejoice! Just like Paul says, “Rejoice in the Lord always”, and “In every circumstance give thanks”. Your present moments are preparing you for the future God has in store. The moments you can’t wait to get to will come in time, so enjoy all the wonderful blessings that are taking place right now.
